OMG, I am a passive consumer!

OMG, I’m a Passive Consumer!
By Christine Rap
August 28, 2011

I’m Christine Rapagnola and I’m a student. I am not an environmentalist, nor a scientist. I am just one person who has chosen to make some changes in my consumption because of the information I learned and I’m sharing it with you.

When I first began learning about Eco-Science, I was predisposed to believe that it is the corporations that drive decisions. So, it is their responsibility to create products that are safe for the environment. This attitude has shaped my buying decisions because the problem is not mine. It is the corporations or the government who allows them to continue to shelve these products. They are available so they must be safe, right? I really wanted to know, what really happens to some of the ‘stuff’ I recycle. Is it enough that I’m recycling or is it just putting a band aid on my overall consumption?

My thinking has now shifted to thinking about environmental awareness in terms of the fable of the Golden Goose. The farmer, after becoming rich from the golden eggs, grows impatient and more greedy. He kills the goose but when he opens it up, discovers there’s no more golden eggs inside. That’s the point at which I feel civilization is at with the environment. We are greedy and we want more golden eggs or more technology that is the latest and greatest. We want convenience foods and technology and we don’t care what form it’s in. When we’re done using something, we simply throw it away or recycle. As long as we don’t know where it’s going, it’s a mystery and it’s not our problem. I learned that it’s not very responsible.  We are killing the Golden Goose (Earth). How can we possibly have a sustainable future if we don’t change our habits? We are consuming way too much, wasting non-renewable resources and it’s killing the golden goose, our delicate Ecosystem.

So, when my thoughts are pointed toward me, the consumer, I can begin to understand how to make better choices. I’ve come across a term called passive consumerism. It’s what a lot of us do, we accept media messages to believe that we need these items and don’t do our own research. We trust companies and the advertisers too much and they do not have our best interest at heart.

Why do I feel like I need these things?
How Passive Consumerism is shaping our minds?

In a study done in UC San Diego, they learned that since 1981, annual media consumption grows 5%. Here’s a diagram to see a breakdown.

How is passive consumption of media shaping our buying habits?

What happens when we watch TV? We watch ads! In 2010, One of our children had an accident with her medal and our television. It broke. We decided there would be no television for six months. It happened in October which meant that the holiday season would be without television. Of course, we did watch holiday DVD’s, but we were spared commercials. The items my children asked for were much different than their friends’ wish list. Our children wanted dolls and craft items. Their friends asked for a Nintendo DS, video games and the latest and greatest toys. Our children are younger but I believe that this is an example of how media and ads effect our consumption. Do we really need all of these things?

In the 1950’s, consumerism was seen as a help to housewives. Next, everyone wanted a car and that became more popular than public transportation. Eventually, we all got credit cards to make all of these ‘new’ and ‘best’ products available to use.  Now we have so many buying options, nearly unlimited money resources and consumerism is permeated into our everyday lives. Everyday e are bombarded with ads in stores, newspapers, magazine ads, computers, television and heck, even our own government encourages ‘consumer spending’ to help economy. Someone or something is paying the cost for the companies making lots of money and unfortunately it happens to be the consumers and poor countries (we'll get into that later in this blog).

HABITS
If we know what we do is bad. How come we keep doing it?

Thomas Paine once said that a long habit of not thinking a thing wrong gives it a superficial appearance of being right...”

Things don’t become a habit overnight. Even good habits take time to develop. Habits are usually formed for a reason but then become routine.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Habits are routines of behavior that are repeated regularly and tend to occur subconsciously.[1][2][3] Habitual behavior often goes unnoticed in persons exhibiting it, because a person does not need to engage in self-analysis when undertaking routine tasks. Habituation is an extremely simple form of learning, in which an organism, after a period of exposure to a stimulus, stops responding to that stimulus in varied manners. Habits are sometimes compulsory.

OUR HEALTH

None of us need to be reminded that sitting down and eating unhealthy foods is causing our health to decline. Obesity in America is at an all time high. Michelle Obama is currently trying to put a stop to childhood obesity by changing lunch food menus and limiting treats at parties in public schools.

WE ARE BROKE

As we are aware, credit card debt in America is a huge problem. In the Documentary ‘Maxed Out’ directed by James Scurlock, it investigates credit card and mortgage debt in America. Many credit card companies simply offer credit to anyone who is able; including people who have previously filed for bankruptcy. Those people, the debtors are the reason why they can make so much money. They pay monthly payments forever! Even people with disabilities who are hospitalized are getting offered huge credit lines.

WHERE DOES OUR TRASH GO?

We love to consume and throw away. It’s become a crutch to make us feel ‘better’. It’s become a habit!  There’s more to environmentalism than habits.

The United States is the #1 Trash consumer in the world! In a year, it’s estimated that one person creates 1,609 pounds of trash! The United States only makes up 5% of the world’s population and is making 40% of the total trash.

Americans use $2,500,000 bottles every hour and then they are thrown away. Some of those bottles get into the ocean and kill marine wildlife.

It’s more than habits that drive us to purchase things and create a demand. For example, food and gasoline are of high demand. How about a demand that was created by a company? I am not merely talking about a genius marketing campaign ad with a beautiful woman selling cosmetics or a fit man utilized to help sell a workout machine. I’m talking about a clever story dreamed up by rich and powerful companies to scare you into believing you need something essential for life like water. Lets talk about the bottled water industry. On the site http://www.storyofstuff.com, you can learn about many industries.

Do you know the story behind why the bottled water industry became so successful?  Even before I get into that, you should know who owns the bottled water industries: companies like Coca-Cola. They started realizing that as people became health conscious, demand for soda would decline. How do you convince people that they should pay for something that’s almost free? If you create a story that tap water is unsafe, you can create demand for something that’s good for you and that these companies can capitalize on. Tap water and bottled water, unless you live in a polluted area, is virtually the same. The ads may paint a different picture of where bottled water comes from. Oil is used to make the water bottles and then more oil to ship it around the planet.

Recycling Continued

Do you like Hershey Kisses? Did you know that every day 80,000 Hershey Kisses are wrapped in foil. It’s enough to cover 40 football fields. That’s excessive and that foil can be recycled; but usually is thrown away.

Aluminum cans can be recycled into a new aluminum can within six weeks. Hard plastics can be reused while soft plastics must be thrown away. Paper can be recycled into more paper or packing material and packaging. Recycling is a great help!

Technology Changes so rapidly. What do we do with the waste?
Some things cannot fully be recycled. What happens to that stuff?

For an eye opening experience, watch this documentary. It is something I cannot forget.

Sadly, a lot of our trash gets exported to poorer parts of the world in India, Ghana, Vietnam and Malaysia. Our trash includes the water bottles, our old electronics and other items that we no longer need because we’ve replaced them with different stuff. The E-waste or electronic waste is usually a donation from corporations and individuals. It’s an easy fix, right? The ‘processing’ facilities consist of dumping grounds where men, women and even children are burning, smashing and ‘cooking’ materials to extract any gold or re-usable electronics. They inhale the fumes which include lead. They do this with no equipment, in a huge ‘junkyard’ with no protective gear. The fumes they inhale are toxic and they go into the atmosphere and the toxicity of these methods cause these people to become ill. The companies who pay them take those salvaged materials and sell them to corporations who use them to make more newer gadgets for the richer people. Those people can be from places like Germany, U.K. and the US.

Consumer Responsibility
I am leaning toward being an informed consumer.

A carbon footprint is defined as:
The total amount of greenhouse gases produced to directly and indirectly support human activities, usually expressed in equivalent tons of carbon dioxide (CO2).

How much you drive your car, how many water bottles you use, cheeseburgers you eat, everything you consume increases your own carbon footprint.

Carbon permits will allow corporations to make money. Paying people to not do something, only to charge someone else money so that they can. By using less and resisting purchasing more than you need, you are helping to create a sustainable future.

Just because I can, does it mean I should?

We’re in debt, we’re unhealthy and a lot of us are unhappy. Companies tell us to buy and buy and we do because we can. We buy more to fill the void and people in less fortunate parts of the world clean up our mess. Unfortunately, the mess doesn’t get cleaned up entirely. Eventually, we have to stop throwing the problem over the fence and basically just ‘cut it out’ and grow up.

Thank you!

Thanks for reading my blog. I hope that I have given you food for thought. Do we really need all the stuff we have? Are we having fun yet?

We Are Huge Fans--Cake Boss!! Carlo's Bakery

Marcus at Carlo's Bakery--The Cake Boss

Our Crew will get a treat this weekend...Crumb cake from Carlo's Bakery. You know, the cake boss! Marcus and I RARELY watch TV these days, especially because our TV is broken. We love this show, though. I don't know if it's the Mediterranean Family Values/antics we can relate to or because we love food, but even our kids like watching this show. We can also appreciate the talent and hard work that goes into those cakes.

Here's Marcus out front! Can't wait to try the Crumb Cake-just a little bit though, have to watch my figure!

Happiness Equals Skinny!

Photo from 43folders.com

So since we've begun filming and since I've been doing more of the things I love, I feel useful. I feel like I'm on top of the world and I feel like I'm living my dreams. This is why the weight has been coming off! My body is going through that 'shift' right before the fat starts melting.

If you are not doing what you love, and always have said 'someday'. Make today that someday and go out there and make those first steps. You will be healthier inside and out. The world needs you!

Six Skinny Foods: Exercise and Dieting Gap

We have all had this happen and said to ourselves: 'I'm working out and I've gained two pounds. How is this possible?' It is so discouraging when you get on the scale to see all your hard work hasn't paid off.

According to MSN Health, you are still gaining benefits even if you are not seeing it on the scale yet. You are gaining LEAN muscle mass-much better than dimply hangovers.

Remember, look at how long it took you to gain your weight and realize that you'll lose it over time-and usually in a shorter time than you took to gain it! This is more than fair!

September: Vogue 'Dress For Success'

So Vogue's Japan September issue is full of inspiration for work clothing. It is reminiscent of 80's work wear but with a twist. This model's poses crack us up! This is what to expect for Fall Fashion. I'm seeing a lot of neutrals. If you don't want to do the 'fur' trend that is happening, you can pick up a faux fur bag and or scarf to update your wardrobe.

Organize Hair & Doll Accessories

Your Beauty Nails. So 80's Metal Band Groupie. So Fantastic!

And For the OTHER useful Household Tip!

BEHOLD! Your solution for organizing many things at a very low price! This is why Tuesdays are one of our favorite days here at Mom and The Pop Life. Every Tuesday we share awesome tips like this.

If your girls are into dolls as much as mine, you have a lot of little doll shoes, accessories and outfits all over your house.

Similarly, you can use this same solution to organize all your little girls hair accessories. These shoe organizers hang over any standard door or inside of a closet. You can hang them in your bathroom and use them to organize brushes, combs, headbands, elastics, barrettes and bobbi pins by clipping them onto one of the pockets. You can also hang one in your coat closet and organize your mittens, gloves and  sunglasses. Kids can easily access the pockets so that they can put their things away. Pockets can be labeled for those who want extra order but not necessary since the pockets are see-through. No more digging for any of these things!

American Girl sells a similar organizer and wants about $50 for theirs. You can find a shoe organizer for about $10-20 which means you can buy more of them to organize all of your little items.

Here's a link below to one sold at Amazon, however, if you are a bargain shopper, maybe you can find one less expensive?

Should an Artist decide what an artist is?

Recently Lady Gaga did an interview for Q magazine and she said she doesn't think Paris is an artist.

I think Lady Gaga is creative but I also think that she is a product and has merchandised herself as such. Does someone who has made a business out of herself have the right to decide who is an artist and who is not?

I'm not standing up for Paris Hilton but more the thought that anyone should decide who is a 'true artist' and who is not; especially one that is so successful.

On another note, Lady Gaga has also said that she was a theater student and 'studious' in high school and there were 'blonde' girls that did drugs and 'didn't give a F***'. Later, Lady Gaga goes on to say that she did drugs to help her with creativity and her music as well as she later became a blonde. I think this is a case of Pottle vs. Kettle = both are black.

High Fructose Corn Syrup Continued: Can Cause Cancer

So, I recently did a Vlog (video blog) talking about the products in my refrigerator. I have since inspired my friends and readers to look at their own refrigerator. Thank you for all of your emails, comments and suggestions!

I received a link from my very clever friend Kathy. This is from Mercola and it's a article from which they use a source of MSNBC. Spread the word about these nasty toxins. This is not food! Read this article below. High Fructose and large amounts of fructose can cause cancers and contribute to the spread of cancer in your body including the most deadly: Pancreatic Cancer.

Fancy Tuesday 'Tips'

Looks like my girls designed those nails! They're not very practical, are they? They would last for one evening of champagne and dining with forks. No chopsticks while wearing these babies!! Ha

So the Second Fancy Tuesday Tip is for your coffee pot.

I have a cheap and easy solution for cleaning the stains on your pots!

Tools:
You will need a nonscratch sponge and baking soda.
Directions:
1) Pour a little Baking Soda inside your coffee pot.
2) Create a paste with baking soda with a little water.
3) Take your sponge inside and scrub out the stains.

The stains will come out easily and your coffee will taste better too.

This Fancy Tuesday Tip has been brought to you by Christine Sebastian for Mom and The Pop Life.

Jennifer Anniston makes big boo boo on Regis and Kelly

So, Jennifer Anniston made a big 'boo boo' on Daytime TV when she guest appeared on Regis and Kelly a few days ago.

The September 2010 Harper's Bazaar has Jennifer paying homage to Barbara Streisand and the photo spread is absolutely stunning. I own it, so I really know! Jennifer's mishap began when Regis referred to her homage as 'playing dressup' and Jennifer said that she plays dressup 'like a retard'. Ummm, what was she thinking? This is one of those moments when you say to yourself, 'please words, come back now!' Unlike us regular folk, usually we embarrass ourselves in front of a few people instead of in front of millions of viewers; some of which are fans. Some of those fans belong to Human Rights Organizations that do not find her 'cute' comment funny. Some of these fans are probably rethinking their support.

So, Jennifer's beautiful work is tainted with those three words 'like a retard'.

What do you think? Should the world get over it? The word 'retarded' in my opinion is a word that is worthy of being placed in the expletives column of the English language. It is a loaded word that is derogatory. If she was using it like some people use the word gay (as a word to describe being silly), maybe there needs to be a campaign to talk about the use of the word retarded to educate and create awareness.

Jennifer, though I'm sure this wasn't her intent, has provided us with an opportunity to rethink some of the words we use, without thinking and sometimes to be funny. They are hurtful and offensive. If we have the reaction when it's said on national TV, should we have the same reaction when it's being said to us 'in private'.

This one is is being filed as a 'fart in church'.

I really am a Mom living the Pop Life

That's me with the elbow and blonde braids in the middle in 2007 with my beautiful dancers at on of our first we performed at. I look rather lady like with my black pleather boots and fishnets. :)
When I decided to make this blog, I really wasn't sure what I wanted it to be about. I mostly think I wanted it to be about pop culture and how it impacts motherhood, society and children of all ages.

To an extent, I still feel the desire to write about these things.

Now I realize that I really wanted a place to write down my thoughts. Some people would get a journal. I want to be public. One of my purposes in life is to entertain, to engage and to inspire. My whole life I've always been fearless when it comes to my work; and especially when it comes to my music. My husband and I are both songwriters and after the children are in bed, we go down to the studio and write music.

In 2006, my husband and I began developing music and me as an artist. At that time, I had a one year old and a two year old. I was not in shape. I wasn't even in any shape at all in fact! I had put on fifty pounds. I started to work out, diet and ALL of the weight came off. I found a choreographer, interns, a band and even got a prominent music manager. I did this while also keeping a household, going to play dates and Gymboree classes.

Here was this suburban mom with her suburban friends coming to her shows at some not so 'mommy friendly' places. It was a movement. I didn't know it at the time because I was driven by my passion. It was saying a mother can still follow her dreams. She doesn't have to forget who she is.

My husband and I wrote songs that were relatable to what we were feeling. Impeccably produced by my husband Marcus who also worked with New Kids on The Block, our music was described as rocket fuel and explosive. Like 80's music with modern spin, it was electronic, rock, and theater camp. Songs like Wheel of Life outlined how we needed to live for today and not feel bad for ourselves-to just go for what you believe in and follow your dreams.

Monotony is a song about feeling trapped in your life. You ask yourself why you're living this life? My husband and I had so much fun making this music. One of our songs 'Too Much Funn' garnered the most interest and even got featured on Kiss 108.

On stage performing this music, I am space camp, pop queen who had outrageous costumes and a larger than life persona. The show was part Rocky Horror Picture show, part Metropolis but a low budget version!

After some excellent press reviews, I found myself going from small venues to opening for successful artists such as Kat Deluna, Leona Lewis, Maroon 5 and many more.

The music world, especially the pop world is a small one. Sometimes another artist can get inspired by your work. Well, an artist, a popular one did get inspired. Not only did she get 'inspired' by our lyrics but by our sound, show, my persona, my backstory/bio, my press clippings and our marketing. Unfortunately this person was signed by a major and going after that is kind of like a mouse vs. a lion. After all, a signed artist has more talent than an unsigned one, right? Even if that is not true, it's sort of like the rule in this business. Besides this, we don't agree artistically with what this artist has done with our ideas and would never want to be compared with this person.

I got down about it because we poured so much energy into it--not to mention all of the awesome and talented people who worked on the project. I gained weight as a result of letting myself get down and lost passion for something I've always loved.

So, my husband and I started over. We are writing music from the heart. Just like in the Johnny Cash movie, we asked ourselves 'if we were to die tomorrow, what music would we be making?' We have created a whole new sound and we're singing together. :)

As one of my favorite motivational speakers, Dale Carnegie once said "Vitality shows in not only the ability to persist but the ability to start over.

So, we are both working out and getting into shape, eating healthy and it's been a great influence on our girls who see their mom and dad not only doing something they love but working together for it. As parents, it's so important to make time for ourselves so that we have more to give to our children. Dreams don't have to stop being followed.

We are working on a new music video that will be released early winter and hopefully in time for the holidays. More details coming soon!

Maybe I just need a Plan? A good plan.

I know I am not alone in that I want to accomplish so much and achieve those dreams the furthest from my reach. Maybe I just need a fabulous plan? Maybe I can't have it all in one day but I can have bits and pieces of it all in one day. In other words, I need to create a plan that allows me to do it all, a little at a time. Rome wasn't built in a day.

So, I call this plan the Fabulous Plan. Fabulous can mean so many things to different people. What is fabulous to you? For me, an ideal plan would balance me out--working, time with my children, time with the hubby, time to exercise, cleaning/organization time, some music time and some relaxation time and going to bed at a decent hour.

I found these awesome schedules that I'm going to start working with. See if one works for you and if you like it, let me know. Post here!

This link will bring you to a flylady schedule. I like this one. It's basic but efficient and gets to the point. I don't like schedules that require a ton of maintenance. http://www.thehomeschoolmom.com/pdf/weeklyflplanner.PDF

Dunkin Donuts and the Mother Who Passed the torch too soon.

It's a hot day and I just came back from teaching music to the kiddos. I decided an iced coffee from Dunkin D was in order! It's a good time for weight loss and fitness reflection. So, I have been working out about five times per week for a month. I have lost only two pounds but I do see a big difference in my abs and hips so I'm happy for now.

In the past, I have lost weight a lot quicker but this time it's a slower process because I'm not doing any particular diet. I am watching my caloric intake and eating more fiber and fruits and vegetables. What I really need is to be held accountable for my weight. I don't have any events or any goal in particular I'm working towards so I'm using this blog and photos I put up as my motivation. I am accountable when I can be seen. So in other words, for me vanity is more important than health. I know that sounds terrible and I mostly don't eat processed foods and have been eating in whole foods my whole life but I LOVE my desserts and occasionally will binge on said desserts as well as junk food.

What made me change my mind about 'grown up' weight accountability was when my husband and I took the girls to see the Nutcracker. It was on this afternoon, I also decided that at what point should a woman pass the torch and let herself go. I decided it will be never on this day.
There was a woman in her mid forties looking disheveled taking photos of her beautiful and impeccably manicured fourteen year old daughter. It struck me as interesting and I had a couple of thoughts. Was the woman living vicariously through her daughter and was she being the mom that she herself never had? Was this mother believing that she was unworthy of a put together look and perhaps a shower and dental hygiene? Or, did the mother simply pass the torch?
